Fifth Autumn

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

~Albert Camus

Fall is a very beautiful season, with the green leaves turning into bright yellow, orange, and red. Whenever I look out my window, I’m always amazed to see all the beautiful vivid colors… It’s like the nature is giving out its best before yielding to the cold, colorless winter.

As I walk on the busy street, I often wonder if people actually take time to look up and enjoy the fall foliage. It’s like there’s a child in me who wants to grab their arms and said, “Take a look, take a look! Take a good look before it’s gone!!!”

Is it because I’m coming from place that never knew autumn that I’m this excited? This is only my fifth autumn. If I’ve been living in the Northern hemisphere all my life, would I still be this astonished?

I guess the answer to those questions is yes. I’d always be amazed to the colors of the fall, no matter what. And I know that one day when I return to the equator, this will be one of the things that I miss.

For students, October and November are always busy. Papers are due, so many group assignments, mid-term exams… But I’m glad that I always manage to take a quick break to enjoy the beautiful parks in Den Haag. Westbroekpark, Clingendael, or Haagse Bos… These parks are much prettier in autumn.

You too, deserve the break. I’m sure you’ll come back feeling refreshed. Fall is happening now. It’s just something you don’t want to miss.
